Poker is one of the most popular games in the world, and has been for some time. While no one is able to say for certain the exact origins of the game, its place as a mainstay among card games is not arguable. Poker has been enjoyed by a wide variety of people through the years, from cowboys of the old west to beat cops of old Chicago, from military men in both world wars to those defending freedom around the world today, and from blue collar workers to the backroom boys of mega corporations. To summarize everybody loves poker. It’s as simple game, one that is easy to learn and fun to play. You don’t need a lot of things to play poker and the things that you do need are either easy to find or easy to improvise. You need a set of regulation playing cards, any set will do as long as they are a full and regular deck of 52, you need some sort of betting device, chips are the most common but anything that the players agree to the value of is able to work, and you need a flat surface that is large enough to play on, the most common are kitchen tables, card tables or even in some cases oil drums. Those who take the game of poker seriously however, are likely to own poker tables that are designed specifically with the game in mind.
Poker tables can be simple in their design or highly intricate. They may be solely designed for the game of poker or this may be one of many games that are meant to be played on the table. The poker table is a device that was conceived not out of necessity, you can play the game of poker just as easily on a upturned wash tub as you can on a fancy poker table, but rather as a way of adding a level of sophistication to a game that in the past has been associated with being rather low brow.
Poker tables are available is a wide variety of styles, sizes and price levels. The cost of a poker table is going to depend greatly on its construction style, and the features that it offers. Tables can range from low cost, simple styles to very expensive and high quality “furniture pieces”.
Simple poker tables may be just that, simple. They may be a printed surface of felt on top of plastic, and may have collapsible legs which allow the table to be broken down and store in a closet or under a bed. They usually will have a place for five or six players and little else to offer in the way of “frills”.
A more elaborate version of the poker table may be made of carved wood with a heavy frame and a surface made of very high quality felt. They may not have the playing surface printed on but rather it may be embroidered. This type of table is often seen with customized printing and logos on the top surface in the center. These premium tables will often have comfortable matching club chairs and are usually much larger than their simple counterparts, seating as many as 8-10 players. These tables often have additional features such as beverage holders, removable ashtrays, poker chip trays and more.
There are, of course, also tables that fall in the middle and offer the convenience and price of the simple tables while also letting you have some of the other features as well. These tables may have the collapsible legs and smaller size but also allow the customized logos and things like beverage holders and poker chip trays. They are a nice compromise between the two versions for players who want to enjoy their game more, but may not have the room or the funds for an actual full size professional grade poker table.
A relatively new invention is the poker table top. This is essentially the top surface of the middle option but rather than having legs of its own it sits on top of a regular card table, dining table or kitchen table. With one of these table tops you can turn any flat stable surface into a decent poker table. They usually seat six players and often fold up to 1/4 their unfolded size so that they are easy to transport and setup anywhere your next friendly game takes you.
Poker tables are a great way to add a new level of enjoyment to your games. They are cheaper, easier to own and more widely available than ever before. There are many different styles and features to choose from and most of all they make great gifts for the poker player in your life. Poker tables are a fun, and very welcome addition to any poker player’s life.
